Beautiful catalog of works by James Ensor from the Antwerp and Swiss Collections at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts. James Ensor (1860-1949) was a Belgian painter and printmaker based in Ostend, Belgium. He is associated with the art movements of Expressionism and Surrealism. Many of Ensor's paintings are satirical and fantastical in nature and feature recurring elements such as carnivals, mask-like faces, puppetry, and skeletons. Ensor was inspired by Belgian Carnival and Japanese masks, the former of which he had ready access to as his mother carried them in her gift shop for Ostend's annual Carnival. Ensor's paintings were initially derided for their "grotesque" style and content, but he eventually received recognition in the late nineteenth century. Heavy and oversized items may require additional shipping.
