Good + first trade edition, 7 3/4” x 6”, tan paper wraps, printed on cotton rag with sewn binding. Bruised tips, heavy wear to bottom edges, pen mark to front, firmly bound, clean interior. James McNeill Whistler's lecture delivered in 1885, reprinted widely through the 1940s, in which he expressed his belief in defending, "art for art's sake," opposing the Victorian concept that put art as a social or moral function of society. Bookplate affixed to front wrap interior from the library of Charles and Virginia Baldwin, 1919 with dual crests. Wealthy couple who built a massive Newport-style mansion in Colorado Springs.
