Described by Cézanne as “humble and colossal,” Camille Pissarro is considered one of the great artists of the 19th century.  Pissarro established himself early in his career as an artist of independent and original vision, and became a senior member of the Impressionist group--the only member who took part in all 8 of the Impressionist exhibitions--while also becoming a mentor of Cézanne, Van Gogh, and Gauguin.  This wide-ranging monograph is filled with beautiful illustrations, chapters on Pissarro's early years in St. Thomas and Venezuela, his arrival in France, his involvement with the birth and crisis of Impressionism, his evolving interests, and the later paintings.
