Pages pristine and intact. Replete with color illustrations. Published on the occasion of an exhibition of the same name that showed at the Duke University Museum of Art from September 26-December 29, 1996. Beautiful catalog of all 123 tinted and watercolored lithographs of the Holy Land made by Scottish artist David Roberts (1796-1864). Contributions by W. D. Davis, Eric M. Meyers, and Sarah Walker Schroth. Foreword by Michael P. Mezzatesta. Preface by Dennis M. Campbell. Much of the catalog is a facsimile reprint of Roberts's "The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia," a two-part series of lithographs that were first published in 1842 and 1849, respectively. Roberts had traveled to Egypt, the Holy Land, and nearby regions from 1838-1840 and made many sketches of what he saw there. He then collaborated with Belgian lithographer Louis Haghe to make his famous series of prints of the Near East. Roberts and Haghe's prints were accompanied by descriptive text by George Croly which is also reprinted herein.
