A catalog that accompanied an exhibition held in 1980 at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa that featured the drawings of Joanne Julian, an Armenian-American artist. Julian's paintings are highly influenced by Zen Buddhism, and her work merges cultural and artistic conventions of East and West. However, Julian's style is entirely her own. Robert McDonald, Senior Curator of the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art, says of Julian's work, "A sense of energy in motion, irrespective of imagery, dominates her works in graphite. Forms curling like waves spin and twist through space. It would seem that the velocity of Julian's mark-making would inhibit her control. With the sureness of an athlete or a dancer, however, she combines energy with grace."
