He earned a Bachelor's in Engineering at Dalian Railway Institute, but his career changed course when he met Marjorie Francisco, an English professor at the Institute who formerly taught art in Sacramento, California. Francisco saw Jian's paintings and encouraged him to develop his artistic craft in the United States and sponsored a trip for him. In 1986, Jian arrived in the U.S. and studied under noted contemporaries such as Fred Dalkey at Sacramento City College, Manuel Neri, and Wayne Thiebaud. Jian has taught as a professor in the U.S. and China, has exhibited internationally, and currently works in California and Beijing.
