Description

Bailey, Holly M., Editor, Ithaca, New York: Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, 1977. Very Good perfectbound 4to,  7" x 10", unpaginated.

Very Good  art exhibition catalog, stiff black wraps featuring the 1950 Kay Sage painting, "Small Portrait" in full color to the cover, creasing to top of spine, rubbing to hinges of front and back cover, minor bumping to tail and foot, else intact, tight, sharp, clean and unmarked throughout. Unpaginated. Includes one photograph of the artist at the frontis and 38 black-and-white images of her paintings in chronological order from the 1920 painting "Young Girl in Orange Dress" to "Blue Wind" from 1958. Kay Sage is considered one of the lesser-known pillars of the surrealist movement, and while she was a contemporary of many notable artists in that movement, and married celebrated surrealist Yves Tanguy, she did not necessarily identify as a surrealist. The complicated persona of Kay Sage is here presented in a 6-page essay by her close friend and vocal posthumous ally, Regine Tessier Krieger, her pieces in chronological order lending them context alongside the included Chronology of her life.
