Notes: Fine 12" x 12" oversize chocolate brown cloth over boards, gilt lettering over black inlay stamped to cover and spine, sharp tips, no visible shelf wear, perfectly clean, tightly bound, unmarked throughout. Fine wraparound pictorial dustjacket has one 1/8" tear to flap, otherwise fully intact, not price-clipped, and protected by a mylar sleeve. Fine pictorial slipcase showing no visible shelf wear or other damage. A gift worthy volume. 415pp. including a Preface, essays by Johnathan Brown, Richard L. Kagan, Egbert Haverkamp-Bagemann, and Fernando Marias, a Catalogue titled, "The Itineraries of Anton van den Wyngaerde" divided into six segments detailing first life at court, then journeys to Aragon, La Mancha, Andalusia, North Africa, and two journeys to Old Castille, each section being replete with reproductions of both the artist's black-and-white sketches, each with a detailed description, and his finished views including many full-color oversize fold-out reproductions. Also includes an Appendix for two unidentified towns, a Glossary, Bibliography, List of Contributors, and an Index. From the dustjacket: "In 1561 Philip II commissioned Europe's leading topographical artist, Anton van den Wyngaerde, to prepare a series of views illustrating the principal cities of his Golden Age empire...These drawings not only record Spain's cities during the most glorious moments in their history, but also depict them with a precision that can almost be described as photographic."
